It is pretty difficult to get bored in Townsville if you're a fan of the outdoors. The weather is glorious all year round, so water sports are popular and ever present.

The fishing in Townsville is top notch, whether you go with a charter or caste a line from the beach or, for a bit of family action, head to the Townsville Strand proper. Here there are playgrounds galore, a free water park for the kids and a variety of water sports on offer.

Townsville's beachfront promenade is also a popular spot for rollerblading, cycling and romantic walks by the glistening Coral Sea.

If you prefer indoor entertainment or are a bit of a history buff, Townsville has you covered. The North Queensland Military Museum and the Coral Sea Battle Memorial Park in Cardwell are both fascinating and commemorate the regions strategic role during World War II, while the Museum of Tropical North Queensland will interest children and adults alike.

There are also a number of cinemas in Townsville, Reading Cinemas being the biggest.

Nestled between the outback and the reef, Townsville is the gateway to a myriad of interesting day trips. Just 20 minutes off shore is beautiful Magnetic Island where there are plenty of gorgeous beaches to swim or snorkel and you could also try your hand at diving, mountain biking, hiking or sailing while you're there.

Charter Towers, a historic gold mining town is in the opposite direction, inland from the city. The whole family will enjoy the Venus Battery Park, the old world charm and exploring the beautifully restored town centre.
